2013 Exercise and Sport Science Award Winners

The Athletic Training (AT) Program at Eastern Kentucky Universty was well represented at the Department of Exercise and Sport Science Honors Awards Day.   The Department selected Dave Werner, MAT, ATC, LAT Associate Director of Sports Health for the University of Florida as the 2013 Outstanding Alumnus of the Year.

David Werner, MAT, ATC, LAT the current Associate Director of Spors Health at the University of Florida, where he also serves as the men's basketball athletic trainer, was awarded the Eastern Kentucky University Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences 2013 Outstanding Alumnus Award.  Dave is a 1991 graduate of the EKU athletic training program, who completed his Master's Degree at the University of Louisville.  He then went on to work with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1993, then served as an Intern Athletic Trainer back at EKU from January 1994 to May 1994, before taking

The EKU ATEP and all 48 professional phase students and faculty attended the student SEATA conference in Atlanta, GA.  The conference had 80 invited faculty from all over the United States and was comprised of 842 athletic training students with eight of the ten districts of the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association represented and over twenty five states.  The conference provides three tracks one for students in the first year of EKU's program, on for second year EKU program students and then a competencies workshops for EKU senior students to help them review and prep

The EKU Athletic Training Education Program has six students five sophomores, Senior Andrew Brubaker and Sophomores BreAnna Hankins, Bridget Eaton, Caitlin Adams, Karyn Zaage, and Jessica Kidwell attended the NATA Bi-Annual iLead Conference which is held in conjunction with the NATA's National Athletic Trainers Educators Conference or ATEC this past weekend in Dallas, TX (Jan. 11 to 12, 2013).   This will also continue the tradition of having had students at all iLead conferences since the conference started 6 yeas ago and this is held every two years.

NATA President Jim Thorton, MS, ATC, CES contacted EKU ATEP Student Andrew Brubaker, the current SEATA Student Senate Chair and this past years winner of the NATA Bobby Gunn Scholarship and invited Andrew to present a short oral report as a part of President Thorton's address at the iLead Conference in Dallas, TX on January 11 to 13 2013.   Andrew will be also be one of six EKU ATEP students who will be attending this national leadership conference designed to develop future leaders in the athletic training profession.

Athletic training students presented several case studies at the KATS Annual Members Symposium this past weekend at Bellarmine University.  Kayla Goyette a rising senior presented "Initial Management and Expedited Care of an Acute Ankle Injury of a Football Player,   Josh Heines, ATC a graduated Senior Presented a cas of a " Female Collegiate Cross Country Runner with Chronic Knee Pain, and Rising Senior Andrew Brubaker with Jenni Williams, MS, ATC and Anna Nicole Kamp, MD, MPH presented the case of a " Sudden Collapse of Middle School Baseball Player".

EKU Athletic Training Student Adam Diamond Receives Award from KATS

The Kentucky Athletic Trainers' Society (KATS) awarded and recognized Adam Diamond, a rising Senior in the EKU Athletic Training Education Program, as the KATS  Undergraduate Scholarship Award winner.  This is a competitive scholarship process.  Adam is an excellent student and well-deserving of the KATS scholarship. Adam received his scholarship at the Awards Banquet during the KATS 2012 Athletic Trainers Society Annual Symposium held June 1& 2 at Bellarmine University.
